When the Heavens Opened to Bless: Peru's First National NMI Congress
The day before Peru's first-ever NMI National Congress, the sky over Chiclayo darkened and the rain refused to stop. Delegations from all 16 districts—some traveling for days from the Amazon jungle—were already on their way, yet everything pointed to cancellation.
Pastor Marleni Palma, national NMI coordinator, responded not with panic but with a call to prayer. God heard. The rain stopped. The ground stayed wet, but hearts burned with a fire no storm could extinguish.
The seminary courtyard became a living map of the world, as each district set up a booth for a global region—its music, dress, food, and prayer needs—turning every stop into an act of intercession for nations most would never visit.
For three days, leaders including Global NMI Director Cheryl Crouch preached toward one horizon: the world yet to be reached. But the most moving sight wasn't the stage—it was the young faces filling every session, many already serving through the AVIVA mentoring program. God is raising up a generation in Peru that not only hears the call but answers it.
Missionaries were honored as the whole gathering prayed over them. When the delegations went home, something had changed. Peru is daring to dream of becoming not just a country that receives missionaries, but one that sends them.
The Church of the Nazarene in Peru began with missionary Roger Winans in 1914. Today it has over 70,000 members across 16 districts.
